What Are the Different Types of Entryway Lights?

Entryways are funny. They’re usually small, but they carry a lot of weight. The first few seconds inside your home happen there. The light should feel intentional.

Most entryways use one of four main types of fixtures.

Chandeliers are common in taller foyers. They fill vertical space and give the room a clear focal point. When the ceiling height allows for it, a chandelier can make the whole area feel grounded instead of empty.

Pendants are similar, but often simpler. A single pendant works well in a narrow entry. In longer spaces, two or three can create a clean rhythm overhead.

Flush mounts and semi-flush mounts are practical for standard-height ceilings. They stay closer to the ceiling but can still feel sculptural if you choose the right shape.

Wall sconces are usually supporting players. They add light at eye level, soften shadows, and help the space feel layered instead of flat.

In most cases, the best entryways use a mix. One fixture rarely tells the whole story.
