Most kitchens need three things. General light, focused light, and a little bit of personality.
Start with ceiling lighting. Recessed lights are common because they spread light evenly and don’t take up visual space. If you have lower ceilings, a flush mount can work just as well.
Next comes task lighting, which honestly might be the most important part. Under-cabinet lighting keeps your countertops bright so you’re not working in your own shadow. If you have an island, pendants can double as both task and decorative lighting.
Then there’s the visual side of it. A pair of well-scaled pendants over an island can completely change how the kitchen feels. They don’t just light the space, they anchor it.
As for bulb color, neutral white usually works best. It keeps food looking natural and the space feeling clear without going too cold.
The biggest mistake is relying on one fixture to do everything. Kitchens work best when each light has a job.
