The top of the stairs is more important than most people realize. That first step down needs to be clearly visible.
A ceiling light or recessed fixture directly above the landing usually works well. The key is even coverage so there are no dark areas that make depth harder to judge.
Wall sconces near the top can also help. Light coming from the side reduces shadows and makes the edge of each step easier to see. That layered approach feels more comfortable than a single bright overhead light.
Consistency matters too. If the hallway at the top is bright but the stairs are dim, your eyes have to adjust as soon as you start moving. That moment of transition can be uncomfortable.
Avoid placing a bare bulb or overly bright fixture right at eye level. Glare can make it harder to see where you’re stepping.
Good lighting at the top of the stairs isn’t about style first. It’s about clarity. When it’s done right, you won’t think about it. You’ll just move naturally and safely.
