You can hang a pendant in a lot of places. Anywhere is pushing it.
First question, is there wiring where you want it? If there is an existing ceiling box, great. That is the easy version. If not, you are talking about running new wiring through the ceiling, which adds time and cost.
Then there is clearance. In most homes, you want about 7 feet between the floor and the bottom of the fixture in areas people walk through. Over a dining table or kitchen island, you can go lower because no one is passing underneath.
Scale matters too. A small pendant in a huge living room can look a little lost. A large drop in a tight hallway can feel like an obstacle. The fixture has to match the room, not just physically fit in it.
There are also practical considerations. Is it a damp area like a bathroom? Is the ceiling sloped? Is there enough structural support for a heavier piece?
So yes, you have flexibility. Pendants are not limited to kitchens and dining rooms. They can work in bedrooms, entries, even over nightstands.
Just make sure the location makes sense both electrically and visually.
If it feels in the way, it probably is.
