What Are The Rules For Bedroom Lighting?

There are no strict rules for bedroom lighting, but a few guidelines help.

First, do not rely on one light source. A ceiling fixture alone rarely feels good at night. Pair it with bedside lighting so you are not climbing out of bed to hit the switch.

Second, stick with warmer bulbs. Cooler light can feel too sharp in a space meant for rest. Warmer tones are easier to live with in the evening.

Third, think about placement. Bedside lights should sit at a height that lights your book without shining straight into your eyes. Overhead fixtures should be scaled to the room so they do not overpower it.

Dimmers are worth adding. Bedrooms serve different purposes throughout the day. Fixed brightness limits you.

And finally, pay attention to proportion. Small lamps can look lost. Large fixtures can feel heavy.

The goal is comfort and control. If your lighting can shift with your routine and never feels harsh, you are following the right rules.
