What Are the Different Types of Pendant Lights?

Pendant lights come in a few main types, and each one suits a different kind of space.

Single pendants are the most common. One light, one drop, suspended from a cord or rod. These work well over smaller tables, in entryways, or anywhere you want a simple focal point without too much visual weight.

Mini pendants are smaller in scale and often used in multiples. You will see them lined up over kitchen islands or bars. Because they are compact, they can be spaced evenly without overwhelming the surface below.

Multi light pendants group several bulbs into one fixture. Instead of installing three separate pendants, you get a single canopy with multiple drops. This can feel cohesive and sculptural, especially over round tables or in rooms where you want a bit more presence from one central point.

Linear pendants stretch horizontally and are designed for long dining tables or large islands. They spread light more evenly across a wider surface and can look cleaner than a row of separate fixtures.

Beyond structure, pendants also vary by shade style. Some use glass to diffuse light, others rely on metal shades to direct it downward. The right type depends on ceiling height, table size, and how much light you need directly below.

Choosing the right category first makes the rest of the decision easier.
