How Do I Maintain My Living Room Light Fixtures?

Maintaining your living room light fixtures is mostly about staying ahead of dust.

Over time, dust builds up on shades, bulbs, and metal surfaces. That layer can dull the look of the fixture and even reduce how much light it gives off. A quick wipe with a soft microfiber cloth every few weeks makes a noticeable difference.

If your fixture has glass shades or globes, take them down carefully and wash them with warm water and mild soap. Make sure everything is fully dry before putting it back together.

For metal finishes, less is more. A damp cloth is usually enough. Strong cleaners can damage protective coatings, especially on painted or plated surfaces.

It’s also smart to keep an eye on bulbs. Replace flickering ones right away, and if your fixture uses multiple bulbs, consider changing them at the same time so the color and brightness stay consistent.

Every so often, check that screws and mounting hardware feel secure. Especially for ceiling fixtures.

If you ever notice buzzing, persistent flickering, or wiring issues, call an electrician. It’s not worth guessing with electrical problems.

A little routine care keeps fixtures looking good for years.
