How Low Should Pendant Lights Hang In A Hallway?

Hallways are for moving through, not ducking under.

As a general rule, keep at least 7 feet between the floor and the bottom of the pendant. That is the baseline for comfortable clearance in most homes. If your ceilings are taller than 8 feet, you can let the fixture hang a bit lower and still maintain that breathing room.

The size of the hallway matters too. In a narrow corridor, a compact pendant or a slim vertical shape will feel better than something wide and sprawling. You want presence, not interruption.

Also think about sightlines. If the hallway opens into a living or dining space, the pendant becomes part of that view. Hanging it too low can slice through the visual flow. Keeping it slightly higher helps everything feel connected.

And if the ceilings are low to begin with, skip the drop. A flush mount will give you the brightness and shape without sacrificing headroom.

Good hallway lighting guides you forward. It should feel natural. Clear path. Easy height. Nothing to bump into.
