Recessed lighting itself isn’t dated, but the way people use it has changed over time.
In the past, it was common to see ceilings filled with recessed lights arranged in very regular grids. Kitchens, living rooms, and even bedrooms sometimes ended up with rows of lights covering the entire ceiling. The result could feel a little intense, with light coming from everywhere at once.
These days, recessed lighting is usually used a bit more thoughtfully. Instead of filling the whole ceiling, the lights are placed where they actually help the room function. In a kitchen, that might mean lighting the work areas. In a living room, it might mean providing background light while other fixtures handle the rest.
Lighting design in general has also shifted toward layering. Instead of relying on one type of fixture, rooms often combine recessed lights with pendant lights, wall sconces, floor lamps, or table lamps. Each one adds a slightly different kind of light, which helps the room feel more balanced.
The fixtures themselves have improved as well. Modern recessed lights are smaller, more efficient, and often use LED technology that produces better light with less energy.
So recessed lighting hasn’t really gone out of style. It’s still widely used. The difference today is that it’s usually part of a bigger lighting plan rather than the only light in the room.
