A floor lamp is a free standing light fixture designed to sit directly on the floor. Most are built with a weighted base, a vertical stem, and a light source at the top, usually paired with some kind of shade or diffuser.
Unlike flush mounts or wall sconces, floor lamps don’t need to be installed. They plug into a standard outlet and can be placed anywhere a little extra light is needed. That simplicity is part of what makes them so common in living rooms and bedrooms.
You’ll often see them next to sofas, lounge chairs, or reading corners. In these spots, a floor lamp brings the light closer to eye level and helps create a softer layer of lighting than a ceiling fixture alone.
There are a few different variations. Some floor lamps are designed to spread light gently across a room, while others focus the light downward for reading or task lighting. Arc lamps, adjustable reading lamps, and tripod lamps all fall under the same general category.
Beyond the light itself, a floor lamp also adds a bit of structure to the room. Because it rises above nearby furniture, it introduces vertical shape and helps balance the layout.
Simple idea, really. A movable light that stands on the floor and quietly fills in the places where a room needs a little more brightness.
