A pendant light is a ceiling fixture that hangs down from the ceiling on a cord, rod, or chain. Instead of sitting close to the ceiling like a flush mount, it drops into the room and brings the light closer to the area below.
You’ll often see pendant lights above kitchen islands, dining room tables, or counters. These are places where people gather, cook, or work, so having the light hang a little lower helps focus the brightness where it’s actually needed.
The height of the pendant plays a big role in how it feels. Hung at the right level, it connects visually with the surface below and helps define that part of the room. Too high and it feels disconnected. Too low and it starts to get in the way.
Pendants can also be used in groups. A single pendant might hang above a small table, while two or three might line up over a kitchen island for more even light.
At its core, a pendant light is simply a hanging ceiling fixture that brings light down into the room while adding a bit of shape overhead.
