A semi flush mount is a ceiling light that hangs just a few inches below the ceiling.
It is not tight to the surface like a flush mount, but it is not long and hanging like a pendant either. It sits somewhere in between.
That small gap between the fixture and the ceiling makes a difference. Light can bounce upward as well as downward, which often softens the overall effect. The room feels a bit more layered compared to a flat fixture pressed right against the ceiling.
Semi flush mounts are common in rooms with standard ceiling heights. If your ceiling is around eight or nine feet tall, a pendant might feel too low. A flush mount might feel too plain. A semi flush mount splits the difference.
You will see them in bedrooms, entryways, hallways, and smaller dining areas. They provide overhead light without taking up much vertical space, so you still have comfortable clearance.
In simple terms, it is a ceiling fixture that gives you a little breathing room. Not dramatic. Not flat. Just slightly lowered, and often a bit more interesting because of it.
