A surface mount light fixture is installed directly onto the ceiling surface.
It does not hang down on a long rod or chain. Instead, the fixture connects straight to a ceiling plate that covers the electrical box. The body of the light sits close to the ceiling, either tight against it or with just a small gap.
Flush mounts and semi flush mounts both fall into this category. The difference is how far they extend downward. Flush mounts stay close. Semi flush mounts drop a little lower.
Surface mount fixtures are practical in spaces where ceiling height is limited. In hallways, bedrooms, or closets, you often want overhead light without anything hanging into the room. Keeping the fixture close to the ceiling helps maintain clear sightlines and comfortable headroom.
They can also work in larger spaces, depending on the scale and design. Some surface mount fixtures are simple and subtle. Others have more presence and shape.
