Accent lighting is the selective one. It does not try to light the whole room. It picks a moment and says, this right here.
A painting. A shelf. A textured wall. Even a plant that deserves more credit. Accent lighting adds contrast by aiming light in a specific direction, usually with a narrower beam and a little more intensity than the surrounding light.
Think picture lights, adjustable spotlights, track heads, or sconces that cast light up or down a wall. Instead of flattening the space with even brightness, accent lighting creates depth. Highlights and shadows start to show up. Surfaces feel layered instead of blank.
The trick is restraint. If everything is highlighted, nothing stands out. A few well placed accents can completely shift the mood of a room. Suddenly artwork feels intentional. Architectural details feel considered. The space gains dimension without getting louder.
It is less about adding more light and more about adding focus. A subtle move, but a powerful one.
