What Kind Of Lighting Is Best For An Office?

Good office lighting should help you focus without making you tired by 2 p.m.

Most offices work best with even overhead lighting that spreads brightness across the room. You don’t want dark corners or harsh hot spots. Recessed lights or flat ceiling panels are common because they keep things consistent.

But overhead light alone usually isn’t enough. Task lighting at the desk makes a big difference. A simple adjustable lamp can reduce shadows on paperwork and keep you from leaning toward your screen.

Color temperature matters more than people think. Light that’s too warm can make you feel sluggish. Light that’s too cool can feel stark and uncomfortable after a few hours. A neutral to slightly cool white usually feels right for work.

Glare is another big issue. If ceiling lights are reflecting off computer screens, people will feel it fast. Diffused light and smart desk placement help prevent that.

Natural light is great if you have it, just not blasting directly into your eyes or onto your monitor.

When office lighting is done well, you barely notice it. You just feel comfortable enough to get through the day without eye strain or headaches.
