Lumens vs Watts Conversion Chart
Let’s make this simple. Watts are not brightness. Lumens are.
For a long time, we all used watts as a shortcut. Sixty watts felt normal. One hundred watts felt bright. That worked when every bulb was incandescent. But LEDs changed the rules. Now watts tell you how much energy a bulb uses. Lumens tell you how much light you actually get.

Lumens vs Watts, What’s the Difference?
Watts measure electricity. That’s it. Lumens measure light output.
Incandescent bulbs were inefficient, so higher wattage naturally meant more brightness. More power in, more light out. LEDs are different. They produce far more light per watt, which means you can get the same brightness using much less energy.
So when you see a 9 watt LED replacing a 60 watt incandescent, that’s not a downgrade. It’s just better efficiency.
Why Lumens Matter More Now
With LEDs, wattage doesn’t guarantee brightness anymore. Two bulbs can both use 10 watts and still look different in a room. That’s because efficiency varies. Most modern LEDs produce somewhere between 80 and 100 lumens per watt, sometimes more.

If you know how bright you want a space, start with lumens. To estimate the LED wattage you’ll need, divide the lumen number by about 80 to 100. That gives you a realistic range for most standard LED bulbs.
For example:
800 lumens usually requires around 8 to 10 watts
1600 lumens usually requires around 16 to 20 watts

Choosing the Right Brightness for Each Room
Brightness isn’t just technical. It changes how a room feels.
Living rooms are often comfortable between 800 and 1600 lumens per main fixture, depending on size and how much layered lighting you use.
Bedrooms usually feel better on the softer side, around 400 to 800 lumens for bedside lighting, with more overhead if needed.
Kitchens and work areas need stronger light. Think 1100 lumens and up, especially over counters.
Bathrooms benefit from solid, even light around mirrors, often starting around 1100 lumens to reduce shadows.
And remember, one bulb rarely does everything. Layering fixtures creates depth and balance.
